California Quail

California Quail

Callipepla californica

California quail is a stunning bird with a recognisable feather crest on its head. The males also have beautiful contrasts in grey, brown and white, while the females are more discreetly coloured.

In Norway, California quail are kept as ornamental quail, but they are not very common and not a quail for beginners.

Internationally, it is one of the most popular ornamental quails. It is kept both for its characteristic appearance and for its lively sounds. It thrives best in groups with plenty of space, and is often perceived as an active and social species.

They live in flocks, but form pairs during the breeding season. The female builds the nest on the ground while the male helps by guarding the area. Several broods may join together after hatching, and all adults contribute to the care.
