Gambel's Quail

Gambel's Quail

Callipepla gambelii

Gambel's quail is an eye-catching species that a few enthusiasts have introduced into Norwegian quail farming, and it is considered somewhat unusual here.

The male Gambel's quail is easy to recognise by its forward-bending feathers and is named after the male's black belly. The female has more subdued colours.

Gambel's quail are sociable and prefer to move in small flocks. They prefer to run rather than fly, but will make short and quick escapes if frightened.

The sounds vary from short contact calls to louder warning calls, and many people find them lively and entertaining birds to watch.
